Wondering when to bring your little one in for their first dental visit, or trying to find a practice where your child will actually feel at ease? Or maybe you’ve got a kid who’s a bit nervous about the dentist and you want to make sure the experience is a good one.
We get it, and our team here at SmileSavers is used to working with children of all ages and temperaments. We take things at their pace.
Kids' Dental Care
Starting dental visits early sets children up for a lifetime of good oral health. At SmileSavers, we provide age-appropriate dental care focused on education, prevention, and making sure every child leaves feeling comfortable and confident about coming back.
We offer both Classic and Premier options for children’s dental care, and every visit is tailored to your child’s age, development stage, and individual needs. Whether it’s a first visit for a toddler or a routine check-up for a teenager, we involve you in the process and make sure you leave knowing exactly how your child’s teeth are tracking and what to do at home.
When Should Your Child Come In?
We recommend children have their first dental visit by age two, or within six months of their first tooth appearing. From there, six-monthly visits work well for most kids. It’s a good time to book if:
- Your child has their first teeth coming through and you’d like a baseline check
- It’s been six months or more since their last visit
- You’ve noticed white or brown spots on their teeth, or changes in how they’re eating
- Your child is experiencing tooth pain or sensitivity
- You want to get ahead of any potential orthodontic concerns as their adult teeth come through
- You’d simply like to establish a positive routine around dental care from an early age
We’ll tailor every visit to what your child actually needs and keep you informed throughout.

Common Questions About Kids’ Dental Care
When should my child have their first dental visit?
We recommend bringing your child in by age two, or within six months of their first tooth appearing. Early visits are usually brief and relaxed, focused on getting your child familiar with the environment and giving us a chance to check that teeth and gums are developing well. The earlier we can establish a positive routine, the easier dental visits tend to be as they grow up.
How do I prepare my child for their appointment?
Keeping things calm and matter-of-fact works best. Explain that we’ll count their teeth and check that they’re healthy and strong. Try to avoid words like “hurt,” “needle,” or “pain,” and steer clear of promising rewards for “being brave” as this can suggest there’s something to worry about. If you have your own anxiety around dental visits, it can help to have another family member bring them along, or to chat with us beforehand about how we can make the experience as smooth as possible for everyone.
Will my health fund or a government scheme cover the visit?
Many health funds include children’s dental care in their extras cover, and we’re preferred providers for most major funds. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) also provides up to $1,000 over two years for eligible children aged two to seventeen, covering examinations, cleans, and a range of basic treatments. Eligibility is based on family income and receipt of certain government payments. Bring your health fund card and Medicare card to your appointment and we’ll check your entitlements and process everything for you on the day.
