Accessing Superannuation for Dental Treatment
Accessing Superannuation for Dental Treatment
Book Your Appointment TodayWhen Major Dental Work Feels Out of Reach
Sometimes you need significant dental treatment but the cost feels overwhelming. For eligible patients facing high-cost treatments like implants or extensive restoration work, it may be possible to access your superannuation early through a government-approved process.
At SmileSavers, we work with Access My Super to help you navigate this option. We provide the clinical documentation and treatment planning, while they handle the complex application process with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for you.
What Is Compassionate Release of Super?
Compassionate release allows eligible people to access their retirement savings early to pay for essential medical and dental care. This is managed by the ATO and only available under strict conditions – mainly when you need treatment to relieve serious pain or address a condition that can’t be delayed.
Important to understand: we don’t approve the release. We support your application by preparing detailed treatment plans that meet ATO requirements, but the decision is entirely up to them.
Who Might Qualify?
This option may be available if you need complex or high-cost dental treatment and can’t afford to proceed any other way. The ATO reviews each case independently, looking at whether the treatment is clinically justified and urgent.
People typically consider this option for:
- Dental implants, including multiple teeth or full-mouth treatments
- Major restorative work like crowns and bridges
- Oral surgery with medical implications
- Treatment needed to manage ongoing pain, infection or problems with eating and speaking

ATO Decision and Fund Release
What You Should Know
Do you decide if super gets released?
No. The ATO makes that decision. We just provide accurate treatment information and documentation. We have no influence on the outcome.
How long does this take?
It varies, but once all documents are in, the ATO can take several weeks to decide. Super fund processing adds more time. Starting early helps avoid delays.
What does it cost?
Yes, Access My Super charges a service fee, usually paid from the released super funds after approval. They’ll explain this upfront. You may also have tax implications, so independent financial advice is worth considering.
Start with a plan
If you’re thinking about using super to fund your dental treatment, the first step is a consultation with us. We’ll assess what you need, explain your options (including our Everyday and Premium packages), and provide the documentation to move forward.
