Can full mouth rehabilitation restore severely damaged teeth in Blairmount?

Presenting Clinical Problem

A patient in their fifties presented with extensive dental damage affecting multiple teeth and requiring comprehensive rehabilitation to restore function and appearance.

  • Severe Tooth Wear: Years of teeth grinding had worn down most back teeth to near gum level, causing sensitivity and chewing difficulties
  • Multiple Failing Restorations: Old silver fillings had failed in several teeth causing fractures, decay, and structural weakness
  • Missing Teeth: Two back teeth had been extracted due to extensive damage, creating gaps affecting bite stability
  • Root Canal Requirements: Three teeth showed signs of nerve damage requiring endodontic treatment before restoration
  • Bite Collapse: Loss of tooth height had caused jaw overclosure leading to facial muscle strain and joint discomfort
  • Aesthetic Concerns: Front teeth showed significant staining and wear affecting appearance and confidence

The primary clinical objective was to restore proper bite height, replace missing teeth, and rehabilitate damaged teeth to achieve comfortable function and improved appearance through comprehensive treatment.

Treatment Plan & Clinical Process

A staged rehabilitation approach was implemented to systematically restore oral health and function over multiple phases.

Phase 1: Foundation Treatment:

Root canal treatment was completed on three damaged teeth to eliminate infection and prepare them for crown restoration. Temporary crowns were placed to protect treated teeth and begin establishing proper bite height.

Phase 2: Bite Restoration:

Multiple permanent crowns were fabricated and placed on worn back teeth to restore proper chewing surfaces and bite relationships. Digital bite analysis ensured optimal jaw positioning and muscle function.

Phase 3: Missing Tooth Replacement:

A 3-unit bridge was placed to replace missing back teeth and restore complete chewing function. Bridge design was coordinated with existing crown work for optimal integration.

Phase 4: Aesthetic Enhancement:

Professional teeth whitening was performed on remaining natural teeth to coordinate with crown and bridge shades. Front teeth received minor reshaping to improve proportions and remove damaged edges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clinical Outcome

The comprehensive rehabilitation addressed the extensive dental damage and restored both function and appearance through systematic treatment. The crowns and bridge provided stable chewing surfaces while the bite restoration eliminated jaw strain and discomfort. How well this extensive treatment works depends on excellent oral hygiene maintenance, wearing protective night guards to prevent further grinding damage, avoiding excessive forces on restored teeth, and keeping up with regular maintenance visits.

Full mouth rehabilitation represents a significant commitment requiring ongoing care and periodic component replacement over time. Everyone heals and adapts differently to extensive dental work, and the longevity and comfort achieved in this case may vary considerably for other patients.
